Hi, my name is Kaitlyn
I have been an outsider most of my life, desperately seeking a cracked window or unlocked door to the house of belonging that everyone else seemed to have access to.
I’ve lived so much of my life sabotaging and suffocating who I am so that the certain, safe, and shallow could remain true. It’s what’s expected of most of us.
After the accumulation of trauma, complete disconnection, and grief became too heavy for me to hold any longer, I finally cracked open and the desperate breath I’d been holding for my entire life came rushing out as one long primal scream.
My psyche broke down over the span of 2 years. During that time I moved between mental health facilities, hospitals, parents, and friends. I never lacked a place to sleep, for which I have profound gratitude, but I had no home.
The nearest and last time I came to losing my life brought me to the moment I made my choice to live. I didn’t know how but I knew I had to try. So I picked up and moved to Pennsylvania.
When I got here I bought my first houseplant. It received the same neglect I showed towards myself but somehow it managed to hang on for dear life. Not once, but many times, this pothos refused to die. Slowly, I began to listen and learn what this plant was teaching me.
In seeing something so seemingly small and incapable fight so hard to survive and then to see it succeed, subconsciously I thought maybe I could, too. It took the smallest acts of care but when done consistently my plants began to not only survive, but thrive.
When you start seeing that kind of beauty come from such small acts of care, that beauty begins to grow in you too, and before you know it you’re surrounded by the abundance of joy that comes from such growth.
I began moving up the career ladder at work but when I began experiencing intense chronic health issues my ability to show up for the work I loved began to suffer. I gave my all in a desperate effort to “make things work”, but when my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, everything changed.
In the excruciating and profound process of caring for her the last 6 months of her life, as my world fell apart, my path became clear. Who I am, how I show up in the world, my unique gifts, all of it fell into place and Root & Renew Coaching was born.
My Approach
Plant care offers a universe of deeply meaningful and effective ways to engage with self care, reflection, creativity, and connection, in addition to many other benefits. Plant care aligns beautifully with coaching, creating added layers of meaning, possibility, and insight. Plants are the most natural collaborators for growth and if you’re willing to listen and learn, they will share their wisdom with you.
I am a Master Certified Life Coach through the ICF and have spent the past 10 years working in a corporate management role where I excelled at team building, earning trust, and fostering an environment of connection and growth.
Dream it
What is a dream? What are your dreams? Do you have one - or many? If you do, great! Together we’ll explore how to bring your dreams into reality. If you don’t, great! Together we’ll explore the possibility of what your dreams can be.
Grow it
Rooted in your values, together we will collaborate in bringing your dreams into reality. The plant you will receive when you work with me will be a companion on the path, but they are not the path.
FAQs
What's the difference between coaching and therapy?
While both coaching and therapy can provide support and guidance, the key difference is that therapy focuses on treating mental health conditions and understanding past experiences to heal emotional and behavioral issues, while coaching aims to help individuals achieve specific goals in the present and future, usually by focusing on personal development and behavior change without delving deeply into past trauma.
How do plants fit into Root and Renew Coaching?
Plants serve as scaffolding in forming the habits and character traits needed to create lasting growth and change. They act as a mirror for our lives, reflecting our rich and deep inner worlds, enabling us to see ourselves more clearly.
When will I receive a plant after I sign up for coaching?
After our first session I will either have a plant sent to you from a local (to you) plant shop. If you don’t have a local plant shop (this isn’t a thing right?), I will send you a plant from my favorite local plant shop in Pittsburgh.
Will you teach me how to care for plants?
I will of course offer guidance/advice when requested but I’m most interested in helping you grow. Our sessions might include some plant assistance but we will primarily be focused on you and your goals. You can find lots of plant care resources, lessons, and tutorials under the resources section of this website.
What happens if my plant dies?
We take time to process the loss of the plant, whatever that means to you. Then we take time to reflect on what might have caused the plant to die (if we don’t already know). If we can sit with discomfort, losing a plant presents an opportunity to learn valuable lessons.
