Water, like joy fills the earth. It finds its way into the smallest, deepest, darkest crevices of life, carrying strength and joy in every drop.

When plants receive the quality and quantity of water they need, the one word I would use to describe them is Joy.

People need joy like plants need water. That might seem extreme, but I believe it’s true. Joy seems like an extra - a luxurious bonus feature for the fortunate, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

When we invite joy into our lives, we invite the possibility to not only survive but thrive, especially during darkness.

droopy days

Like plants, we all have droopy days and like plants, it never ceases to amaze me the difference a little bit of water can make.

Like water, Joy gives us the energy to stand tall, express the boldness and variation of our true colors, and strength to explore the darkness knowing the buoyancy of joy will always be enough to bring us back to the light.

the joyfulness of plants

Joy is my home,

my truest nature

It lives in the deepest wells of my spirit

It’s the water that gives me life

and when it fills me,

it courses through every crevice of my being,

until the boundaries of my body can no longer contain this

force of nature

and it rushes out of me seeking to saturate,

and nourish

the soil and roots and leaves

of those around me

Sometimes these wells of joy seem empty,

at least barely a drop to hold

But joy can be found even in the driest desert

And like a desert,

when joy floods over,

the possibility to transform the terrain of our lives,

to break down our hard, stoney fears,

and renew our dry parched souls,

takes root and begins to grow

We can flourish

and create

and play

and live

Where there is life, there is joy

And where there is joy, there is living
